Abstract

An easy and inexpensive method is described for measuring the amount of retard pad penetration for a friction retard belt feeder system. A detector for this penetration (see Figure 1) consists of two plastic sheets, one transparent 5, the other colored 6, sealed along their edges and containing a small amount of colored opaque liquid 4 between them. When this detector 3 is placed between a retard pad 1 and feeder belt 2, the liquid is squeezed out at the point of contact 7, exposing the background. See Figure 2. The exposed background can now be measured using either a ruler or a preprinted scale on the lower sheet of plastic.
