Abstract

A simple bottom sheet feeder/separator using a thin weighted flexible elastomeric strip 1 as the retard element in combination with a feed roller 2 having only a small raised high friction feed pad 3 thereon, i.e., the rest of the feed roller has a smaller diameter with low frictional surface so as not to interfere with the fed sheet being pulled away by downstream feed rollers once it is fed out by the intermittently operative pad 3 on the feed roller. The feeder thus provides bottom feed friction retard sheet separation with both high and low friction surfaces on the same sheet driving element (the feed roller). The high friction surface 3 overcomes the retarding force and sheet-to-stack friction to drive the sheet out of the separator. The low friction surface then comes into contact with the stack but does not apply sufficient force to separate a sheet from the stack. The flexible elastomer strip retard element 1 is draped over the cylindrical drive element 2, giving good contact between the retard and drive elements.
