A retard type sheet feeder/separator in which the retard member is a brush 1 (rather than a roller or belt or finger). It also employs a set of bottom sheet feed rolls 2 extending through apertures in the tray bottom under the retard brush 1. The rolls 2 are rotated in the direction of paper travel.

Selection of brush 1 materials (elastomer, plastic, metal) is matched to the specific application. The brush bristles can be made of high friction elastomer and/or low friction plastic. Being the retard element, the brush is slightly deflected in the direction of paper travel by interference with the feed rolls, and accomplishes a document shingling affect, thus retarding the second sheet and all subsequent sheets in the stack. Each fed sheet is conventionally fed into take-away pinch rolls

3.

An alternative top sheet document feeder/separator could be provided by reversing the positions of the feed rolls and retard brush.
