Abstract

An automatic recirculating document handler (RDH) with two self-contained constant velocity document transports 1 and 2 in the RDH document loop to enable scanning both sides of a two-sided (duplex) document during a single pass through the document handler. One side of the document is scanned by movement through the first platen constant velocity transport (CVT) location 1 and read electronically remotely from a raster input scanner (RIS) system 3 located below the platen glass 4. A second RIS system 5 is contained within the RDH to optically access the second side of each document on the same circulation. This provides a single pass duplex input system for an electronic imaging input terminal. It enables high productivity scanning of duplex documents at a straight-through (noninverting) simplex rate. It is compatible with dual side (duplex) printing by using subsequent electronic image reversal of one of the two RIS generated electronic images to provide right reading images at the output printer. A pivotable mirror 6 diverts folded optics between the first CVT 1 and the platen 4 scanning mirror 7 so the first RIS 3 can also be used alternatively for conventional platen scanning of a document on the platen 4.
