This disclosure relates to a flash fuser for fixing toner images to copy sheets. A flash fuser 10 illustrated in the figure comprises a pair of flash lamps 11 supported between a reflecting cavity 12 and a protective cover 14. A copy transport 16 serves to move a copy sheet 17 having toner images thereon into thermal communication with the energy emitted from the lamps 11.

In order to shield the cover 14 from dirt, toner, paper dust and toner effluent an air curtain is created by drawing air through a nozzle 18 positioned at the inlet of the fuser and through apertures 20 in the cover 14. Air is thus drawn over the top of the toner images carried by the copy sheet to form a protective air curtain, the air is exhausted via an exhaust duct 22 disposed adjacent the outlet of the fuser 10.
