Abstract

A means to automatically determine the configuration of a copier with a distributed intelligence microprocessor architecture, in particular copiers with variable configurations. Software must be known if a sorter or finisher, recir-culating or semi-automatic document handler is connected to the machine. One method is an input used to inform software if a remote processor is connected. Another method is a byte put into non-volatile memory which would be set by the Tech Rep at installation to indicated machine configuration. This could cause problems because error checking must be put in to safeguard that the Tech Rep dicl not make a mistake in entering the proper configuration.

A preferred method is a software program to send a software message to every position that could have a control board. In the case where two boards are interchangeable (such as an RDH or SADH), the remote processors should have the same software task on them. This way the master can send only one message to the input/output station and have it recognized by either board. The remotes will then return information indicating the type of input or output station. This information can then be stored in RAM for the rest of the system to use in control.
