Abstract

The figure illustrates a paper feed device wherein a supply of paper in a tray 20 is biased into feeding engagement with a stationary feed device 12 such that the top sheet of paper in the tray is in feeding engagement with the paper feed device. In the figure the spring tray 20 is pivotally mounted about deliverv end 22 on the paper feeding platform 24. The spring tray is urged upwardly by spring 26 against the paddle wheel feed mechanism 28 which feeds the top sheet 30 of a stack of sheets 32 in a forward direction. As the sheets in the stack are depleted, the spring force urges the spring tray upwardly to maintain the top sheet in the stack in feeding engagement with the paddle wheel. However, as the weight of the stack of sheets decreases there is a greater tendency for the tray to bounce or oscillate upward and down. The ratchet assembly illustrated reduces this bounce in the spring tray by providing a firm support to the spring tray as it moves to a higher level. The ratchet assembly comprises a tooth member 34 on the paper support platform 24 which is engaged with a ratchet 36 pivotally mounted to the bottom of the spring tray. Alternatively, the ratchet assembly may be replaced with a combination of a high friction material supported on the platform and a roller rather than a ratchet with a high friction surface and a one-way clutch.
