Abstract

In an electrostatic ink jet printer, it is important to locate the phase point of the ink stream breakup to ensure the proper charging of the ink droplets. The standard process of phase location is time consuming because it involves charging a droplet and monitoring its deflection downstream while varying the charging phase across the droplet flight time. The problem becomes especially difficult when the phase point of multiple jets from an array are to be located.

In a system of N jets, the following simplified procedure is recommended. After servoing the jet stream velocity, located the phase of the jet streams hy the usual method. The phase location for each jet stream is designated as !d , e2..., 8 . Next, perturb the jet streams from the nominal operating point localed by tge usual method to obtain a set of measured phased shifts designated as
