Abstract

Referring to Figures 1 and 2 of the drawings, an articulating hinge 5 is shown for supporting the platen cover 6 in operative relation with the platen glass 7 of a copier. Hinge 5 comprises a generally U-shaped member 9 having one end 10 fixed to a cross shaft 11 which is suitably journaled in copier frame section 8, cross shaft 11 being adjacent to and extending in a direction substantially paralleling one side of platen glass 7. The opposite end 14 of hinge member 9 is pivotally attached by pin 15 to the interior of cover 6. At least two hinges are provided for supporting cover 6.

ARTICULATING HINGE (Cont'd)

Hinge 5 can be molded, cast, extruded, or formed from sheet metal. The design of hinge 5 permits copying of documents of different thickness while at the same time maintaining cover 6 in a horizontal attitude. And, hinge 5 eliminates the need for slotted opening in either the cover 6 or in the supporting copier frame section 8. Hinge 5 can be molded, cast, extruded, or formed from sheet metal.
