Abstract

Ink contamination because of erratic jet stream directions during startup and shutdown frequently occurs in the continuous stream type of ink jet devices. Correction strategies which move associated components such as charge tunnels, deflection plates or droplet generator during startup or shutdown result in unacceptable misalignment errors in these components when they are returned to their normal operating positions.

STARTUP AND SHUTDOWN GUTTERING SYSTEM f Cont'd)

Ink contamination because of erratic jet stream directions during startup and shutdown frequently occurs in the continuous stream type of ink jet devices. Correction strategies which move associated components such as charge tunnels, deflection plates or droplet generator during startup or shutdown result in unacceptable misalignment errors in these components when they are returned to their normal operating positions.

This startup and shutdown problem of erratic jet stream direction is resolved by the use of a movable guttering system shown in either Figure 1 or 7. During the startup or shutdown of the ink jet device, a movable gutter is Positioned to intercept the ink streams from each nozzle. After the ink streams have been stabilized, the gutter is removed from the paths of the ink jet streams.

Referring to Figure 1, nozzle plate 11 containing nozzles 12 emit ink streams 13 under pressure. The ink is perturbed to cause it to break up into droplets at fixed distances from the nozzle plate. The charge tunnels and deflection plates have been removed for clarity. A movable guttering apparatus 15 comprises spaced ink receptacles 16 which project above a common manifold 17. The gutteriw apparatus is movable in...
