As shown in the figure, a highly efficient web cleaner 10 has a Dlurality of contacting rollers 12 which squeeze the web 14 against the recording surface 16 of magnetic tape 18. Such a web cleaner cleans the magnetic tape surface so thoroughly that the magnetic recording head (not shown) remains clean for an increased operating time. The cleaning web 14 is withdrawn from supply roll 20 and taken up on take-up roll 22 at approximately 20 inches/hour by any well-known means in the prior art. The web is moved in the direction opposite of that of the magnetic tape and at a much slower speed. Guide rollers 24 are located at each end of the web cleaner 10 and press against the side of the magnetic tape 18 opposite the recording surface 16 to keep proper tension in the magnetic tape and appropriate force against the web rollers 12.
