Abstract

This concept envisions a combined readerhnk jet printer which utilizes, as shown in Figures 1-3 and discussed below, a lightweight input read head 6. The printer is designed for the low speed (i.e., 1 to 4 documents per minute) low resolution scanning/printing environment, the input read head 6 being essentially isomorohic to a class of type I11 ink jet print heads. In this case, the write head would, for example, comprise an array of 40 jets mechanically traversed across the copy paper being printed, such that the write head prints a swath of 40 rasters in one pass. By repeating this process, a complete document page is printed utilizing a motion akin to that of a typewriter.

Reading a document original 11 can be similarly effected, and accordingly read head 6 comprises a read bar having a 40 by 1 array of photosensors 14 with cooperating illuminator 15, imaging system 16, and a means 18 which would be common to both read head 6 and the write head for mechanically traversing the read head 6 across document original 11 and the write head across the copy page, either in unison or separately. A single wire, bit serial interface 24 is provided between read head 6 and the write head.
