Abstract

An electrophotographic printing machine that offers sorting and finishing capabil-ities with a recirculating document handling system is particularly desirable in a centralized environment. The output devices of the printing machine may be a sorter, finisher, and stacker. The input device is a recirculating document handling system having a slot which enables both manual feeding of original documents, or the feeding of computer forms feeds. Furthermore, the recirculating document handling system will automatically recirculate the set of original documents a desired number of times to reproduce the requisite number of sets of copies therefrom. The recirculating document handler, sorter, and finisher, as well as the printing machine processor are all modules capable of being interfit with one another in any desired manner. With both a sorter and a finisher, the printing machine is capable of running in a continuous mode. In this mode, the recirculating document handling system runs in both the automatic document handling mode and the recirculating document handling mode. The sorter is filled to its capacity with the recirculating document handling system operating in the automatic handling mode and fills the finisher while the machine operator is unloading the sorter. When the finisher is full, this process is reversed and the operator unloads the finisher. In this way, it is seen that an electrophotographic printing machine employing a recirculating document handling system, a sorter, and a finisher may be run continuously.
