Abstract

It is the desire in automatic reproducing machines to be capable of reproducing images on paper of various sizes. In order to do that it is necessary to provide a paper feeder from the paper supply capable of feeding sheets of various sizes. The figure illustrates an automatically self adjusting center registration type feeder for feeding different paper sizes which may be placed into a universal paper cassette. Paper is placed in a universal cassette 10. The cassette is designed with side guides 11 that adjust to the paper size. The guides are designed such that there are levers under the tray that form a cam 34 which are

positioned at different places depending upon the paper size. In other words, the tray is adjusted for the paper size and this action prepares the tray to perform the function through the position of the cam when the tray is inserted into the machine. The paper feeder in the machine comprises a series of three feed wheels axially mounted on a driven shaft 10. The stationary feed wheel 12 is positioned in the center and is fixed to the shaft 10. The remaining two feed rolls 14 and 16 are driven about the shaft 10 but are axially slidable along the shaft. They are spring loaded toward the center of the feeder by means of springs 18 and
20. Each of the feed wheels is spaced from the springs illustrated by means of spacers 15. The outboard spacers 15 of feed rolls 14 and 16 are attached to both ends of a cable 30 which is routed around the paper feeder around two pulleys 28 and around the wheel 32 under the paper feeder. When the tray is inserted into the paper feeder the cam on the paper tray contacts wheel 32 and properly adjusts the feed rolls to the...
