Abstract

The figure illustrates a multimode document handling apparatus for use with a reproducing apparatus. The document handling apparatus 4 is placed in an upper frame portion 6 which is pivotally mounted along its rear edge to a lower frame portion of the reproducing machine which contains a substantially horizontal imaging platen 10 and a generally horizontal document transport path thereover. With the document handler in the closed position as indicated, a document may be loaded in chute 14 which includes a gate 16 to permit loading of successive copies in the chute while preventing it from being fed as the preceding document is being copied. Single copies are prepared by inserting a document into the chute lifting the gate and transporting the document across the imaging platen 10 by transport roll pairs 18 and 20. Multiple copies of the documents may be obtained by reversing the direction of the transport rolls 18, 20, 22 to drive the document after having once been copied back across the platen in the horizontal path past the exit portion of the chute to be transported forward again across the imaging platen by the reversing direction transport roll pairs 18, 20, and 22. In the multicopy mode at the same time that the document is being reciprocated across the platen in the horizontal direction the chute can be used as a wait station for the insertion of the next document to be copied. The chute may also be used as a wait station during the stream feeding of successive documents. To copy pages of a book, the upper frame portion 6 is pivoted up and the book is placed on the transport rolls 18 and 20 which transport it across the imaging platen 10.
