COUPLED MOTION LINKAGE (Cont'd)

The linkage (1,2) enables a sorter cover (3) and an intermediate frame (4) to be hinged away from the sorter main frame (5) by different fixed amounts to permit access to both the intermediate frame and the main frame.

A first link (1) is hinged by one end at a fixed point (a) on the main frame, and is hinged by its other end to the second link (2) by means of a hinge pin (6). The other end of the second link (2) is hinged at a fixed point (b) on the cover (3).

The lower ends of the cover (3) and the intermediate frarne (4) are hinged to the main frame about a common axis (7) or about closely-spaced axes.

When the cover (3) is opened, as shown in the drawing, the hinge pin (6) between the links 1 and 2 is restrained by the upper end (c) of a slot (8) in the interrnediate frame (4). This firmly holds the interrnediate frarne and cover in the desired positions for access. When the cover is closed, the link (2) pushes the intermediate frame (4) towards the main frame, and the hinge pin (6) moves down the slot (8) until, in the closed position, the pin (6) is at the lower end (d) of the slot (8).
