Abstract

The optical disk described herein emulates the Phillips trilayer disk. However, this optical disk uses second surface ablation rather than first surface ablation as for the Phillips disk. The media is a solar black material such as black Au (gold) or black Cr (chromium) and the reflector layer is Au (or Cr). The optimal thickness of the black Au and Au layers can be determined through experimentation.. The Si02 thickness is 1/4 the wavelength of the laser light used for the reading process.

The procedure for configuring the optical disk as shown in the figure:

I. Clean disk substrate.

2. Place in ultraclean, leakproof evaporator with one resistive boat source, electron beam unit, and glow discharge or ion beam mil ling capability.

3. Pump down to 5 1 x torr within 2 hours.

Glow discharge or ion beam mill the disk substrate.

i 6. Mask off disk edges by a remote control automated process.
