Abstract

In a sheet sorter of the angularly-indexible bin type which uses wire or other tensile members to determine the maximum angular spacing between adjacent dividers forming the bins, there is a difficulty in ensuring the exact alignment of any bin with the sheet entry slot. This is because the wire stretches or deforms, and because the dividers flex under load or with use.

In a sheet sorter of the angularly-indexible bin type which uses wire or other tensile members to determine the maximum angular spacing between adjacent dividers forming the bins, there is a difficulty in ensuring the exact alignment of any bin with the sheet entry slot. This is because the wire stretches or deforms, and because the dividers flex under load or with use.

This problem is overcome by positive location of the lower divider forming the bin which is in use at any one time.

The sorter shown in the drawing has a sector 2 which is indexible (by means not shown) about shaft 4. The sector has six dividers 6 extending outwardly from it to form five bins 8. The lengths of the dividers are such that their outer ends lie on the same curve as the sector pivots. The sector also carries an edge cam 10 engaged by a cam follower 12 at one end of a push-rod 14 connected to a pivoted pawl 16, located outside the envelope of the dividers. The cam is dimensioned so that as it is indexed, the pawl is pushed out of contact with one divider to permit it to move with the sector and falls back to contact the next divider in order to locate its position.
