In such a machine, two different parts of a cylindrical photoconductor drum are exposed simultaneously to respective identical light images derived from a single original. A beam splitter such as a half-silvered mirror is used to form the two images.

Double simultaneous imaging in a xerographic copying machine is described in U.K. Patent Specification No. 1543406. In such a machine, two different parts of a cylindrical photoconductor drum are exposed simultaneously to respective identical light images derived from a single original. A beam splitter such as a half-silvered mirror is used to form the two images.

The present proposal is to use a catadioptric lens (1) in a full and half rate scanning system (2). A half-silvered mirror (3) is provided inside the lens, whereby the part (4) of the light which passes through the half-silvered mirror make a single pass through the full lens, while the part (5) of the light which is reflected by the half-silvered mirror make a double pass through a half-lens. Suitably positioned fixed mirrors (6,7,8) then reflect the light to appropriate positions (9,101 on the photoconductor drum (11).
