Abstract

The typical present day label scanner assembly for scanning labels for the presence of control marks such as a change in ZIP code mark as the labels are being advanced to the labeling head of a labeling machine has two significant drawbacks. First, lateral adjustment of the scanner assembly to accommodate different labels upsets the reading gap between label and scanner and thus, the ability of the scanner to accurately see the control marks on the labels. To accommodate this, some mechanism to permit the operator to adjust the gap is required.

First, lateral adjustment of the scanner assembly to accommodate different labels upsets the reading gap between label and scanner and thus, the ability of the scanner to accurately see the control marks on the labels. To accommodate this, some mechanism to permit the operator to adjust the gap is required.

A second drawback is traceable to the mechanism employed to adjust the scanner assembly for different labels. A box design approach is currently used which requires that the entire label scanner assembly be moved when making adjustments. Normally, this is done by mounting the assembly on two parallel shafts, the ends of which are threaded to effect axial adjustment. Not only is this arrangement cumbersome, but any adjustment is awkward and time consuming. Further, it is believed that this arrangement adversely affects label feeding characteristics due to the shift in the location of the label form support with respect to the labeling head whenever adjustment is made.

Referring to the drawing figure, an improved label scanner assembly 2 is proposed here which is intended to reduce operator set up time significantly and eliminate or reduce operator associated errors related to setting up and adjusting the label scanner assembly.
