Abstract

A microprocessor architecture to control two sophisticated servo systems simultaneously with one base processor (microprocessor, clock, RAM, ROM) by off-loading some functions to hardware. Typically, sophisticated microprocessor controlled servo systems become constrained by the speed of execution of code since a servo system must have, and act upon, feedback information at 8 very fast rate. Therefore, a single microprocessor system will be dedicated to a servo function only (but may include very low speed non-servo and non-critical tasks). However, by adding additional hardware and manipulating the architecture, a significant amount of real time execution can be off loaded to that hardware. in doing so, an opportunity arises in that it is possible to control two sophisticated servo systems with one microprocessor base system, the extra "off loading" hardware cost being much less than a duplicate microprocessor base system.

In copier/duplicator devices, the application is, to scan servos, input device servos and copy paper registration servos.
