Abstract

Solvent sensitive PMMA substrates, such as MEKI, may be salvaged for use as an optical disk substrate material by placing a vacuum deposited parylene barrier layer directly on the PMPvZA substrate surface prior to the applicatlon of any other coating, e.g., polymer-amyl acetate, normally used in digital recording memories, e.g., DRM or first and second surface trilayers. The advantage gained is the production of optical media on less expensive molded PMMA, vis-a-vis casted PMMA, with the parylene layer acting as a vapor barrier.

Figure 1 shows a DRM medium I0 comprlslng a PMMA substrate 12, e.g., MEKI, upon which is deposited a parylene barrier layer 14 followed by coilodlon layer 16 followed by a protective AuCt-2 layer 18.
