Abstract

Frequently in the operation of electrostatographic reproducing machines it is desired to provide copies on copy stock other than that which is in the main paper cassette. The Figures illustrate a universal bypass cassette with a multi-sheet capacity to provide a low cost means to enable the operator to have the option of bypassing the main cassette in feeding multiple sheets of the desired paper size, labels or transparencies. As illustrated in Figure 1, the bypass cassette is slidable over the main paper cassette in the machine into feeding engagement with the copier's existing feed wheels. In Figure 2, the bypass cassette which is insertable onto the main paper cassette from right to left, comprises a sheet support platform 16 having two retard pads 24 at the forward end with a fixed side guide 18 and having a front and top corner snubber 20 at its inboard end with a front snubber 22 on the opposite side. It has an adjustable side guide 26 movably mounted in slot 28 in the paper support platform. Upon insertion of the bypass cassette onto the main paper cassette the side cam 30 engages a mechanism on the main cassette (not shown) to retract the main cassette snubber members thereby disabling the main paper cassette to enable use of the existing feed system such as segmented feed roll 14 on the machine. The normal force is provided by the spring 32 in the main cassette. The bypass cassette is provided with two pivot points 34, one on each side of the cassette, which are keyed into the main cassette and about which the bypass cassette can pivot to enable the normal force provisions of the main cassette to drive the top of the bypass cassette into feeding engagement with the feed wheel in the main machine. All that is required to use the bypass cassette is that it be loaded with up to, for example, 30 sheets of paper of a second type and slidably engage the cassette into the main paper cassette in the machine and carry out the copying function.
