Abstract

The essential elements of a roll fuser as shown in the figure are the fuser roll, the pressure roI1,the release agent management system, the heating lamp, and a control element. The main advantage of heatipressure roll systems is the efficient use of thermal energy. Furthermore, the soft roll fuser offers an additional advantage of high copy quality by using a soft surface on the fuser roll to conform to the contours of the toner piles on the copy instead of squashing them as in hard roll fusers. However, difficulty has been encountered in speeding up copiers that employ soft roll fusers.

The main advantage of heatipressure roll systems is the efficient use of thermal energy. Furthermore, the soft roll fuser offers an additional advantage of high copy quality by using a soft surface on the fuser roll to conform to the contours of the toner piles on the copy instead of squashing them as in hard roll fusers. However, difficulty has been encountered in speeding up copiers that employ soft roll fusers.

The important parameters in heaupressure roll systems are roll surface temperature, pressure, and dwell time. One can scale-up the fuser for higher speed applications by keeping these three parameters constant. One way to keep both pressure and dwell time constant is:

Make the outer radii of the fuser and pressure rolls proportional to the process speed.

Keep the Young's modulus and Poisson's ratio for the fuser roll and the pressure roll the same as they are, i.e., use the same materials.

Make the loading between these two rollers proportional to the process speed.

Make the pressure roll layer thickness proportional to the process speed.

Furthermore, in order to kee the same warm-up time and the same cold start temperature drop, one should):

Keep the same copper thickness ( The Figure 1.

Keep the same aluminum thickness.

Keep the same Viton thickness. .

The mathematical expressions for the pressure and dwell times are included herein below.

If the process speed is much greater than the current speed. just increasing the lamp power without changing the fuser roll dimension is not practical. Adding an auxiliary heater may not be practical or attractive.
