Abstract

Various crucible configurations have been devised to reduce "spit" and "spatter" during the melting of metals or alloys for vapor deposition of the metals or alloys onto a substrate. Crucibles having a cross-section shaped like the letter " G have been effective in addressing the spit and spatter problem and are described, for example, in U.S. Patent 3,748,090.

EVAPORATION CRUCIBLE (Cont'd)

Various crucible configurations have been devised to reduce "spit" and "spatter" during the melting of metals or alloys for vapor deposition of the metals or alloys onto a substrate. Crucibles having a cross-section shaped like the letter "G have been effective in addressing the spit and spatter problem and are described, for example, in U.S. Patent 3,748,090. However, due to the "G configuration, it it is dif'ficult to load and clean these crucibles or to observe the residue after completion of evaporation. Loading, cleaning and visual observation of the bottom of the "G' type crucible is facilitated by utilizing a spring loaded baffle which is easily clipped into and removed from the crucible.

A tubular crucible 10 having a cross-section sha ed like the letter "G" is

end by flanges 12 and 14 and contains a slot 16 extending axia ly from one end of crucible 10 to the other. A removable s ring loaded baffle 18 is mounted in

slot 16 and is partially supported by the lower long edge of slot 16. Removable spring loaded baffle 18 comprises a metal slat 20 having a retaining lip 22
along one long edge and at least one spring metal clip 24 having one end fastened to the other long edge of the metal slat 20. Clip 24 e...
