Abstract

In xerographic photocopying applications, a latent image is formed on a charged photoreceptor surface. This image is developed and transferred to an output record medium where the image is fused to render it permanent. The common fusing methods are radiation and/or pressure roll where the record sheets pass through a roller pair. An alternative to these fusing methods , which subject the entire sheet to the radiation or pressure action, is the modulation of a laser beam to selectively heat, or fuse, only the developed image areas. The toner image area on the photoreceptor, and hence on the output sheet following transfer, is stored in the printer microprocessor and appropriate circuitry used to provide the required laser modulation. The laser energy and exposure (fusing) time is a function of the system parameters.
