Abstract

In a developer housing for a xerographic type copying or printing machine, augers such as auger pair 4, 5 are often used to intermix and distribute the toner/developer mixture. However, a problem can arise from contamination of the auger bearing blocks 7, which journal the auger shafts 8,9 in the machine side frame 16, with toner and developer due to leakage of the toner/developer mixture into the bearing blocks and through the bearing blocks to the rest of the machine.

LIP SEAL ASSEMBLY (Cont'd)

In a developer housing for a xerographic type copying or printing machine, augers such as auger pair 4, 5 are often used to intermix and distribute the toner/developer mixture. However, a problem can arise from contamination of the auger bearing blocks 7, which journal the auger shafts 8,9 in the machine side frame 16, with toner and developer due to leakage of the toner/developer mixture into the bearing blocks and through the bearing blocks to the rest of the machine.

To prevent leaking of toner/developer around the auger shafts 8,9, a lip seal 10 is used. To maintain the lip seal 10 in tight sealing engagement with the bearing blocks 7 and the auger shafts 8,9, a compression spring 12 is mounted between the lip seal 10 and a spring retaining block 15.

This type of sealing arrangement provides a fairly large tolerance range (i.e.,

* 0.5 in) on the length of the auger shafts 8, 9. And due to the large tolerances, the parts are easy to assemble, requiring no special tools. The relative simplicity of the seal helps insure reliability and makes the seal a reliable and inexpensive device for sealing toner/developer housings or anything else that requires sealing or containment of contaminates.
