Abstract

A front loaded document sheet handler for a copier. This document sheet feeder takes the document sheet in from the front of the copier, at a tray, guide or other input. This feeder first automatically moves the sheet in rearwardly, and then automatically moves the sheet sideways (a 90 degree motion direction change) across the platen for copying, so that the sheet is moving onto and over the platen in the normal right to left document feeding direction. Preferably this special input or pre-registration feeder takes the document in from the front and then "hands it off, to one side, to a regular over-platen document feeder input, with that regular document feeder providing the document movement over the platen. This special input or pre-registration feeder may comprise a simple spring loaded pivoting friction wheel drive providing the sheet driving mechanism.

A front loaded document sheet handler for a copier. This document sheet feeder takes the document sheet in from the front of the copier, at a tray, guide or other input. The preferred specific 2-axis sheet feeder drive here utilizes a dual rubber-tire drive roller/motor on a shaft which can rotate 90". It is initially spring biased in one position, with the paired rollers aligned with the initial sheet feed-in direction, and then automatically rotates go", after the sheet is fully fed in up against a rear registration wall, to change the sheet feeding direction. There is also preferably a mating pair of semicircular grooves in the underlying sheet supporting surface under the rotational path of the paired rollers. These grooves add beam strength corrugation to the sheet being handled. This 2- axis sheet feeder is used here for a simple document handler which front loads, de-skews and rear registers, and then feeds sideways to the platen.

It is also suggested that such driving mechanisms can be used in a different application. This is for a sheet reverter in a duplex copying system, using two overlying trays and an interconnecting hemicylindrical sheet inverting guide baffle. Sheets loaded into one tray short edge first would be fed therein and then automatically fed sideways (long edge first) by this 2-axis sheet feeder into this curved baffle to feed therethrough from the first tray to the second.
