Abstract

A serious problem with ink jet technologies, of various system types, including bubble jet, is ink drying and clogging of nozzles with disuse (time delays between nozzle actuations). A removable mechanical cover or seal, and aperture purging systems, have been among the proposed solutions.

A serious problem with ink jet technologies, of various system types, including bubble jet, is ink drying and clogging of nozzles with disuse (time delays between nozzle actuations). A removable mechanical cover or seal, and aperture purging systems, have been among the proposed solutions.

A thin oil film seal is suggested as an alternative or compatible nozzle drying prevention seal. [It is noted that oil is used as an ink seal in ball point pen cartridges.} A thin layer of oil or other suitable low volatility and immiscible liquid vapor barrier could be applied by a porous wicking pad in the mechanical cover or seal, or otherwise, so as to creep thinly, preferably in an approximately monomolecular layer, over the ink exposed in the nozzles during disuse, to form a relatively long lasting thin water vapor barrier film over water base ink in the nozzle apertures to retard evaporation there. The volume of such an oil layer should be so small as compared to the volume of an ink jet drop ejection as to not noticeably affect normal inking or drying on the paper.
