Abstract

In a single pass two color copier using a liquid developer material, two developer units are employed. One developer unit is used for one color and the other developer unit for the other color. The first developer unit includes a plurality of developer rollers, all electrically biased to the same potential and magnitude, e.g. 500 volts. The second developer unit includes a first set of developer rollers all electrically biased to the same value, e.g. 200 volts. A second set of developer rollers in the second developer unit are all electrically biased to an electrical bias less than the electrical bias on the first set, e.g. 50 volts. A discharge lamp is interposed between the first set of developer rollers and the second set of developer rollers in the second developer unit. Thus, the second development stage is split with the photoreceptor being uniformly exposed prior to the completion of development. The partial development of the second stage serves as a mask, so that the overall exposure discharges any potential buildup in the background areas from development by the first developer unit. Background development by the second developer unit is reduced and image development enhanced.
