When copying material from a bound document, an operator must perform the following sequence of steps:

1. Open the platen cover,
2. Place the bound document on the platen,
3. Wait for the machine to cycle down.
4. Press the Start Copy button.
5. Wait for the machine to cycle up.
6. Wait for the machine to make a copy.
7. Open the platen cover.
8. Remove the bound documept.
9. Flip pages in the bound document.

The operator then repeats the process with step 2. When copying several pages, the total waiting time in steps 3 and 5 can be substantial thus reducing productivity and negatively affecting the user. This difficulty may be avoided by enabling the copier to be programmed to reduce the waiting time incurred in cycle up and cycle down by specifying a time interval at which to copy originals. For example, an operator can enter a special timer interval mode whereby the time interval between copies is specified on a key pad to program the copier. The copier then makes copies at the specified interval until the operator presses stop. This allows the operator to open the platen cover.and remove the bound document, flip pages in the bound document and place the bound document back on the platen. The operator thereby saves time by not having to wait for the machine to cycle down and then cycle up after pressing "Start" fo...
