Abstract

High speed, high quality, quiet laser printers are an attractive printer option for many offices, especially those that have several microcomputers. Providing one printer per computer, as is often done with less expensive printers, is not an affordable option with laser printers. If the computers can effectively and easily share a single laser printer, more laser printers can be sold.

High speed, high quality, quiet laser printers are an attractive printer option for many offices, especially those that have several microcomputers. Providing one printer per computer, as is often done with less expensive printers, is not an affordable option with laser printers. If the computers can effectively and easily share a single laser printer, more laser printers can be sold.

dNet is a mechanism which enables a number of microcomputers of various manufacture to share a high speeahigh cost printer. It allows a computer user to uniquely reserve a shared cable for high speed data transfer and automatically cancels the reservation after a period of inactivity. The shared cable is interfaced to the RS-232C ports of the computers by a dNet control box
which incorporates the dNet logic and operator interface.

dNet is unique in that it requires no software to operate, substituting operator actions for complicated software or hardware. The operator reserves access to the printer by pressing a push button, and the dNet logic reserves the cable if it Is free, or rejects the request if it Is busy.
