These filters are generally of two types, either canister wherein the reactive material is loose and held in shape by a rigid exterior walled structure or a self-supportin foam which has the

three dimensional matrix of foam. Under heating or exposure to open flame, these filters typically either oxidize or burn and therefore do not pass the increasingly strict flammability standards. This problem may be avoided by the use of a foamed metal, especially aluminum, filter in place of the prior art foam structure. Aluminum is capable of being foamed or expanded to a variety of porosities and has the advantage of economical suitable as well as adding the value of flame resistance. The reactive material may be distributed in the foamed matrix.
