Abstract

A woven plastic conductive fabric is used as an alternative to existing systems for providing positive, continuous, electrical grounding of a rotating shaft. A rotating shaft typically runs in lubricated bearings which can interfere with shaft grounding by causing intermittent insulation of the shaft. This can even cause pitting of the bearing balls by arcing. Shaft grounding is well known in copiers, etc., using copper bronze wiper shaft contact grounding, or the like. However, this can have life problems with wear, and necessitate an extra assembly step.

In the subject system the bearing is make or assembled with a flat donut- shaped disk conductive pad, preferably a conductive or conductively coated low friction plastic fabric, such as a silver plated woven plastic conductive fabric commercially available from Schlegel Manufacturing Co.. This low cost conductive pad is mounted engaging one side of, and bridging, the inner and outer races of the bearing. That provides a direct electrical conduction path between the shaft and ground where the bearing conventionally has conductive inner and outer races respectively engaging the shaft and ground (the copier frame).
