In a duplicator with a finisher, the finisher has the ability to invert sheets in the paper path when needed. The inversion of sheets in the finisher is determined by the machine controller as, for example, when processing duplex copies where it is desired to deliver the sheets to the user in the correct orientation, i.e., face up.

In a duplicator with a finisher, the finisher has the ability to invert sheets in the paper path when needed. The inversion of sheets in the finisher is determined by the machine controller as, for example, when processing duplex copies where it is desired to deliver the sheets to the user in the correct orientation, i.e., face up.

When the finisher is inverting sheets and a request for a purge cycle down occurs for any reason, the sheet information coming with the purge sheets does not request that the sheets be inverted. If a non-inverted sheet follows an inverted sheet in the finisher without a skipped pitch between them, the two sheets will meet (i.e., piggyback) in the registration transport of the finisher, and the post inverter sensor will detect the two sheets as one sheet. Since the controller has sent information that two sheets will be coming to the finisher and only one is detected by the finisher entrance sensor, a lead edge late fault at the post inverter sensor for the second sheet will be needlessly declared.

To obviate this, where the duplicator is inverting sheets in the finisher and a command to purge sheets occurs, the purge sheets will continue to invert until either sheet path cycle down is completed or until a ski ped pitch is detected
