Abstract

In an electrophotographic printin machine, sheet feeders occasionally multi-two sheets are often imperfectly overlapped so that the lead and trail edges of the combined sheets are separated by more than the normal sheet length, i. e. shingle multifeeds. A detector is used to sense this condition and declare a multi-feed. The detector includes a sensor which detects the lead edge and the trail edge of the sheet. A shaft encoder counts the number of pulses between lead and trail edge detection. If a multi-feed occurred, a greater number of pulses would be detected than for a single sheet whereby the software would declare a multi-feed.
