In electrophotographic printing, a customer with originals of varying color substrates frequently has to make a set of copies which are then used as originals in the printin machine in order to get consistent background

the originals, since the copies are second generation copies. Some recent printing machines have an automatic background suppression feature, usually using either the light reflected from the originals or the background electrostatic potential of the photoreceptor, as measured by an electrostatic voltmeter. These systems sense each original immediately before each copy is made. Another technique is to pre-scan successive original documents and record their electrostatic latent image on a photoconductive member. An electrostatic voltmeter samples the latent image. This information is stored and used to adjust the chargejflash for the scan of that original document. The latent image recorded during the pre-scan flash is erased before development.
