In a paper feeder using a fixed feed head and a movable stack of copy sheets, the use of separate motors to drive the feed head and to raise the stack is replaced by a single motor to carry out both functions.

As shown in the drawing, a reversible motor 2 is connected through one one- way clutch to the paper feed head 4, and through another one-way clutch to the stack support surface 6. When the motor rotates in one sense, it transmits torque through one clutch to rotate the feed head, with the other clutch free wheelin and the stack stationary. When rotating in the opposite sense, the motor li f ts the stack, with the one clutch free wheeling and the feed head not rotating. Conventional means are use to sense when the stack needs to be lifted to urge the top sheet into frictional contact with the fed head. When this happens, the drive motor is stopped immediately after a sheet has been fed; it is reversed to lift the stack; is stopped when the top sheet has reached its intended position, and its direction against reversed for when it is necessary to feed the next sheet.

Conventional means are also used to disable the motor when fresh paper is to be added to the stack, and to drop the stack tray. When the tray has been refilled, closure of the paper tray drawer etc. ca...
