Abstract

In a full width array thermal ink jet printing system, it is desirable to offer two or more print quality levels and to allow the user to select a desired output quality level, similar to the commonly known "draft" and "letter quality" options on many printers currently available on the market. In light of the difficulties in achieving perfect full width array ink jet print bars, as well as, the limited life of these bars, the present invention is directed to a thermal ink jet printing device having two or more full width array thermal ink jet bars in each printer.

In a full width array thermal ink jet printing system, it is desirable to offer two or more print quality levels and to allow the user to select a desired output quality level, similar to the commonly known "draft" and "letter quality" options on many printers currently available on the market. In light of the difficulties in achieving perfect full width array ink jet print bars, as well as, the limited life of these bars, the present invention is directed to a thermal ink jet printing device having two or more full width array thermal ink jet bars in each printer.

The figure schematically illustrates the configuration of a two bar thermal ink jet printing machine, 10. Machine 10 employs a transport belt mechanism 12, to move a sheet of paper 14 in the direction of arrow 15. Moreover, the paper moves through a printing station generally referred to by reference letter E. While moving through printing station E, the paper sheet may be printed at point 16a by jets on print array 18a, or at point 16b by jets on print array 18b. Output of the dual ink jet array structure is controlled by microcontroller 20, which outputs data and control signals to demultiplexer 22, which in turn relays the signals to the appropriate array, as determined by select line 24.
