Abstract

An approach to improved paper handling by hardware incorporates optical bar codes on copy paper ream wrappers. The bar codes contain information pertaining to the paper basis weights, sizes and optionally other specialty stock parameters. The information is retrieved by an operator using a reading scan wand with transmission to a controller of a copier or printer for use in automatic subsystem set-up, adjustment and print quality optimization. Machine performance and reliability is improved by reducing failures and enhancing the interaction between paper stock and printing hardware and marking materials. A related concept involving bar coding of individual copy sheets has been previously disclosed by Robinson in the Xerox Disclosure Journal, Volume 13, Number 4, page 191, July/August 1988.
