Abstract

In an electronic reprographic system having a semi-automatic document handler (SADH), it is possible to produce duplex output prints from duplex originals fed via the SADH. It is generally known to use a SADH to copy first side one of all input documents before copying side two of the documents. In the present embodiment, subsequent to imaging side one of all the input documents (1 to N), the documents exist in a reverse order stack (N to 1) which may be fed through the SADH for imaging of side two of the documents in N to 1 order. After imaging side two of the documents, the output stack will be in a desirable original condition. At this point, the electronic images stored within the electronic reprographic system are automatically reordered and paired into duplex output pages by the electronic reprographic system for subsequent printing. For example U.S. Patent No. 4,918,490 to Stemmle (assigned to Xerox Corporation) teshes a system capable of reordering electronic page images in order to prodice collated sets of duplex copy sheets. In the present embodiment, the system automatically determines where the side one images end and where the side two images begin, thereby enabling the system to match the first and second side images associated with each duplex input page. Moreover, in the case cf an odd number of input pages (i.e., the user failed to scan the backside of the Nth input document), the system automatically produces a blank second side image to be paired with the first side image from the Nth input document.
