Abstract

When thermal ink jet (TIJ) printers operate at high print volumes, rapid drying of an ink formulation becomes critical to ensuring acceptable print quality. Improved ink drying times may be achieved by integrating a dual roll heater that delivers release agent. The dual roll system is analogous to a heater fuser roll system employed in certain dry toner xerographic devices for fixing toned images to paper. The TIJ roll heater system requires less energy to dry the thermal ink jet images than the analogous fusing of toner images. The release agent is delivered by means of a wick system comprising, for example a rolled web impregnated with a release agent compound that is slowly advanced as the dual rollers turn. Roll drying may be particularly well suited for full width TIJ arrays.
