Proposed Classification

A novel synthetic process improvement for the preparation of naphthimidazole perinone, a compound that is useful in the manufacture of photoactive devices, is disclosed. The process requires no evaporative purification step as is commonly used for preparing and processing related materials, for example as disclosed in US. Patent No. 4,808,506.

Thus, naphthimidazole perinone is readily prepared by the reaction of 2,3-
diaminonaphthalene with naphthalene tetracarboxylic acid dianhydride in the presence of l-methyl-2-pyrrolidinone solvent and zinc iodide or zinc acetate as catalyst, preferably zinc iodide. The reaction mixture is refluxed for several hours and the product is isolated by filtration and washed repeatedly with hot toluene. The photogenerator compound when formulated into a photoreceptor device exhibits low dark decay and high photosensitivity which is highly desirable but atypical of polycyclic aromatic systems when prepared by a chemical process alone without an additional sublimation step.
