Abstract

A portable intelligent copy quality (CQ) service tool is disclosed. Visual inspection of copy quality of prints from electrophotographic printers and copiers often yields valuable diagnostic information about the vitality of the printing process. Further, comparison of copy quality over time may provide indications of degradation or malfunction of printing hardware or marking materials package. A portable intelligent CQ service tool system comprising a digital scanner, microprocessors having image processing capability, diagnostic software and optionally telecommunications capability is contained in a hand held unit. The system enables field service personnel to quickly and accurately determine copy quality and printing process characteristics. Internal memory may be used to compile a copy quality performance profile over time providing an early warning method for impending machine failures.
