Abstract

An erase lamp that may also be used as a light source for a registration position sensor system is disclosed. The light from a pre-transfer erase lamp in electrophotographic printing and copying machines may be used for reading and sensing the proximity of reference marks on a photoreceptor surface. An optical sensor detects reflected light from the photoreceptor and the position of the reference marks. The positional information is sent to a diagnostic and control system that makes adjustments in electrical or mechanical subsystems to ensure registration integrity. The positional registration system using a shared light source is particularly useful in single pass multicolor imaging applications and where developer housing architectures and configurations impose restricted space limitations. An optical color developabili ty sensor has been disclosed by Butler et al. in U.S. Patent 4,950,905 issued August 21, 1990.
