Abstract

A major strategic thrust among copier producers is to improve copier reliability. One of the major general causes of service actions is contamination. One of the main sources of contamination is paper fiber. Paper fibers are often loosely attached to the sheet of paper and are removed while fed or transported through the machine. These fibers, once loose in the machine, can cause copy quality problems, paper handling problems or mechanical problems. Recent technological trends have been in the direction of intelligent or self-adjusting machines. Therefore, it would be useful if when it was determined that a paper drive system was contaminated (by means of some sensing or performance monitor), that some remedial action was available to remove the debris.

Proposed is a one-way cleaning brush which is essentially a passive device while its bristles are aligned in the direction of motion of the paper feel element (e.g. roll or belt). But, it becomes an active cleaning device, on demand, when the feed element is reversed which engages the bristles. The cleaning effectiveness is determined by the bristle material, length and angle. Selection of the bristle material is also critical to avoid electrostatic problems due to tribo-charging of the roll.
