Abstract

A pivoting retard pad belt assembly for use in paper feeders and document handlers of electrophotographic printers and copiers is disclosed. Existing fixed retard pad 1 configurations are designed to meter a single copy sheet from a multiple copy sheet stack. Fixed retard pads have a limited life caused by frictional wear and abrasion from feeder rolls 2 and paper 3, as shown in Figure 1.

A pivoting retard pad belt assembly for use in paper feeders and document handlers of electrophotographic printers and copiers is disclosed. Existing fixed retard pad 1 configurations are designed to meter a single copy sheet from a multiple copy sheet stack. Fixed retard pads have a limited life caused by frictional wear and abrasion from feeder rolls 2 and paper 3, as shown in Figure 1.

An improved retard pad is shown in Figure 2 and is comprised of a belted retard wear surface 4 mounted around a rotatable and pivoting support assembly 5. The rotating retard belt 4 provides for periodic and incremental advancement of the belt to introduce a fresh surface to ensure proper single sheet paper feeding and multiple sheet retard. The belt is supported by and held in close contact with the feed roll 2 by a damping block 6. The pivoting retard pad belt assembly is effective at reducing wear, noise and service costs associated with retard pad devices.
