Abstract

A xerographic process color printer is disclosed that uses combined tandem and highlight or tri-level architecture. The printer is comprised of three highlight or tri-level marking engines 1,2 and 3. Each highlight engine develops two colored toners "a" and "b" of opposite polarity, for example, a primary color (lb, 2b and 3b) and second custom or highlight colors (2a and 3a) and black (la). The highlight engines (1 - 3) are configured around an intermediate transfer belt 4 for transport to a paper path 5. Advantages of the tandem trilevel process color printer include full four color process capability using only three marking engines and two custom or customer specific color imaging capabilities. The custom colors may be a special color or a magnetic toner composition.
