Abstract

An improved toner rubber mill slab cutter for use in the manufacture of xerographic toner compositions is disclosed. During the course of toner production batch processing, a formulated resin melt is fed to and kneaded between the rolls of a rubber mill forming a continuous sheet output which is placed on a first conveyor belt. A second conveyor belt returns the hot toner sheet to the rubber mill rollers for further milling. After a time, the resultant toner slab is sent to a cooling stage. As the slab exits the mill it is cut widthwise into manageable segments with a reciprocating pizza-cutter like circular knife edge which is slidably mounted beneath an air powered transport cylinder that straddles a mill exit conveyor.

A backing strip made of high molecular weight polyethylene is situated just after the rubber mill exit opposes the knife edge as it cuts back and forth through the toner slab. No intermediate cooling is necessary. Advantages of the cutter include: efficient and clean cutting of toner materials, quieter operation, easy maintenance, enhanced safety, few moving parts and lower cost compared to alternative cutting systems.
