Abstract

Full width array design using thermal ink jet (TIJ) printing, creates writeheads either butted together and inline on a bar or staggered and mounted on opposite sides of a bar. A proposed full width array design that mounts writeheads 10 angled to each other using two mounting bars 20 and 30 is shown in Figure 1 (single color) and 2 (three colors). Mounting bars 20 and 30 with angle 40, support writeheads 10 as a cassette tape case supports cassette tapes. Full width array manufacture is simplified by using similar mounting bars 20 and 30 that automatically align writeheads 10 during assembly. Mounting bars 20 and 30 could be molded with manifold piping to provide ink to writeheads 10, or they could contain a flex circuit to provide electrical connections.

Multiple TIJ printer configurations are possible by varying writehead resolution and the number writeheads per scan width. Varying angle 40 alters

TIJ printer resolution (e.g. spots per inch (SPI)). For example, a 260 SPI writehead is mounted at 30 degrees to provide 300 SPI, 45 degrees to provide 367 SPI and 60 degrees to provide...
